Manufactures are always looking for a 3D printed material for jigs, fixtures, prototypes and end-use parts that is stronger and more durable than what they currently use. Stratasys has introduced Nylon 6 for immediate use in the Fortus 900mc production system.
The Nylon family of polymers has a broad range of uses and is considered one of the most widely used thermoplastic in manufacturing. Its strength and toughness is the best amongst the Stratasys FDM materials. Nylon is a strong thermoplastic widely used in Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Manufacturing, giving engineers the benefit of high strength, tough material and the advantage of 3D printing to rapidly create functional prototypes and manufacturing aides.
Nylon 6 combines the strength of ULTEM 9085 resin, greater than 10k psi, and the toughness of Nylon, greater than 15% elongation at break and greater than 15ft-lb/in impact strength. These properties make it a great solution for applications in the aerospace, automotive, industrial and medical markets.
As one might ask, Nylon 6 is not replacing Nylon 12, but being added to the portfolio of materials from Statasys. Stratasys is constantly evaluating hundreds of materials to meet the applications of today. Used in a broad range of applications, this engineering-grade build material uses soluble support material making removal effortless.
As of November 15th Nylon 6 is now available for Fortus 900mc 3D printers. The material uses standard tips and requires a separate material license than Nylon 12. Available in a black color only, Nylon 6 does not require any modifications or upgrades to your Fortus 900mc.
